Fourth grade is a very exciting year for students. They begin to take ownership of their learning as well as begin developing their executive functioning skills.
They strengthen their independent reading stamina, as well as adding details to their writing. As mathematicians, they delve deep into more conceptual topics, such as division and basic equations.
Social Studies is the highlight of fourth grade. Students dig deep into the history of Virginia, its geographical makeup, and the famous Virginians who came before them.
In science, students explore
- magnetism and electricity,
- force, motion, and energy
These topics will appear again on their science SOL in fifth grade.
Students will take a Virginia Studies SOL this year along with reading and math SOLs.

Hi! My name is Alexandra Tenney and I will be teaching 4th grade at Lemon Road Elementary! I am so excited to be a part of the community and to meet my students. This is my 6th year teaching in Fairfax County Public Schools. My favorite part about teaching is seeing how students grow academically and socially from the beginning to the end of the year. I personally enjoy going to the beach, hanging with my dogs, traveling, and trying new restaurants. I go to Cape Cod and the OBX every year. It is fun to collect shells and see the wildlife. I like to collect ornaments and candles!
