Spring is in full swing!  Be sure to check the weather and send your child to school with layers this week - especially when testing!

Mrs. Callanen's 4th Grade Class participated in a Global Classroom Project collaborating with a teacher and class in Finland this year.  See photos above when two students explained their project at the showcase last week!

See below for pictures of our 5th graders and 2nd graders sharing their recent writing projects in the classroom last week.  Both grade levels had a great experience using their communication skills to share and listen!

Positivity Project: Leadership

Next week, our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Leadership. Leadership means you value each member of your group and inspire people to do their best.

Leadership can be both formal and informal. It is concerned with getting others to do what needs to be done while maintaining group morale to ensure readiness to act in the future. This character strength’s focus is on the personal qualities of leaders rather than the practice of leadership. These qualities include the ability to understand others and inspire them toward a common goal, the capacity to mitigate conflict and mold consensus, and the desire to lead other people.

Bike to School Day - May 8

Lemon Road is joining groups around the world to celebrate the benefits of walking and bicycling on Wednesday, May 8. Ride your bike, scooter, roller skates, or wear your favorite walking shoes and WALK and ROLL with us to school!  Hike it.  Bike it.  You'll like it!♥

Message from Mrs. Castillo

Last week, Lemon Road celebrated Earth Week!  Thank you to all students and staff for dressing each day to represent the colored themes.  It matters!

On Tuesday, the Lemon Road staff had the opportunity to say thank you to our parent volunteers who have helped in the classrooms, throughout the school, and through the PTA with a breakfast.  We appreciate the partnership we have with our parents and hope you will continue to support!

Lemon Road also held our Level IV Orientation where our teachers and select students welcomed families from local schools to Lemon Road to share about our school and community culture.  Finally, on Friday, Ms. Albright, Mrs. Argodale, and Mrs. Argue shared with our parents the work we have done towards Portrait of a Graduate Presentations of Learning.  Thank you to everyone who could attend!

Yesterday, select Lemon Road 6th graders joined choral students and directors from around the county for the annual All County Chorus Festival!  It was a gorgeous event and we are proud of our student singers!

Parent Reminders:

Bicycle PE Unit - Grades 3 - 6

Lemon Road Families,

We are excited to share that we will be starting our bike riding unit in PE for 3rd - 6th grade students. It will begin May 6th and end on May 31st.

We will take all precautions to make sure that your children will be safe the entire time they ride including: wearing hairnets & helmets and teaching students proper bike safety.

Having a properly fitted helmet is critical in keeping students safe, so we ask that students with long hair wear it in a way that a helmet can still fit properly (for example, a low ponytail instead of a high ponytail). Students may bring their own helmet to use during PE.  Lastly, we ask that students don’t wear long dresses, excessively baggy clothing, or sandals on PE days to ensure safe riding.  Thank you for helping your child have the most success possible in this new PE unit!

If your child would like to use their own bike during their PE class, we ask that they ride it to school and lock it on the bike rack next to the trailers in the back of the school (rather than in the front).

Mr. Hickman and Mr. Van Trees

Thank you!

  1. Purchase items for staff gift bags

Positivity Project: Enthusiasm

This week, we will focus on the character strength enthusiasm!  This means you approach life with excitement and energy. You energize people around you. Enthusiasm is the ability to bring life and excitement to different situations. It often leads to a higher level of involvement and engagement both for individuals and for groups. These people are often identified as early leaders and innovators as a result of their outward excitement about a task or project.

See above for some students and staff enthusiastic about animal print day!

Positivity Project: Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence

Appreciation of beauty and excellence is the ability to identify and enjoy that which is admirable in the world. There are three types of goodness in which positive psychology focuses: physical beauty (e.g. a sunset, song, or building); an exceptional skill or talent; and moral goodness (e.g. a character strength). Appreciating beauty and excellence helps an individual experience positive emotions and connect to the world around him/her. It’s an outward facing strength, meaning the individual is focused on the world outside his/her head. Those who appreciate beauty and excellence make their lives more enjoyable by being able to see the world with fresh eyes. “Put yourself in the way of beauty” - Cheryl Strayed.

Message from Mrs. Castillo

What an awesome week!  We began by experiencing the Solar Eclipse on Monday and closed out with our annual Portrait of a Graduate (POG) Night on Thursday.  If you missed POG Night, be sure to ask your child how they have demonstrated one of the POG attributes recently or what work they have begun to put in their portfolio for the year.  We will draw names of students that turned in their POG Night activity card for special prizes on the news next week.

You will be able to view your child's Quarter 3 Progress Report in ParentVue on Monday. Please reach out to your child's teacher with any questions. Lemon Road will send home a paper copy of the final progress report at the end of the year.

On Wednesday, we invite your family to join us in recognizing the sacrifices, and contributions of our military-connected students and their families as we celebrate the Month of the Military Child. One of the most visible displays of support for military-connected youth occurs on Purple Up Day, a day dedicated to showing appreciation by wearing purple – to represent the combined colors of branches of the military.

Speaking of color coordination, we also hope your family will join us for an Earth Spirit Week next week as we reflect on our planet and our responsibility to protect it.

Lastly, this Thursday evening we have some very creative students showing off their art work in the Marshall Pyramid Art Show at Marshall HS. Stop over if you have a moment to see their great work!

Parent Reminders:

Bike Safety

We love that so many of our students walk or bike to school and encourage this extra physical activity each day.  Unfortunately two bikes have gone missing from school grounds during the day.  We have alerted FCPS Security and will be extra vigilant with supervision, however we wanted to make parents aware in case they wanted to send their child with a bike lock.  If anyone has seen the bike above, please let Mrs. Castillo know ([email protected]).  We are excited that our 3rd - 6th graders will actually participate in a biking unit next month as a part of PE and look forward to this new instructional unit!

Return Solar Eclipse Glasses

Send your gently used, unwanted solar eclipse glasses to school. We’re collecting them to send to a school in South America for their October 2 annular eclipse. Send them for reuse and support other students safely viewing the awesome astronomical events this year. (Drop box on the table by Mrs. Busch’s classroom.)

Positivity Project: Purpose

This week, we are focusing on PurposeYou have beliefs about the meaning of life and your life’s purpose. You seek to be part of something greater than yourself.

“Regardless of whatever I do, I know my purpose is to make a difference in people’s lives.”  ~Tim Tebow

Questions you might enjoy talking about:

  • Do you ever wonder what your purpose is?
  • What kind of person do you want to be? What things could you be doing now to enhance the life of those around you?
  • What gifts, talents, and ideas do you have that you want to share?

Message from Mrs. Castillo

It was a great week to welcome back our lions for the 4th quarter of the 2023 - 2024 school year.  There is a LOT going on for the rest of the year.  Please make attending school on time everyday a priority for your family.  Students are expected to be in their classroom by 8:15 AM each day.  We miss your child when they are absent or tardy!  Check out FCPS attendance information here.

Congratulations to our students who have recently competed in regional chess competitions and been so successful!  Thank you for bringing in your trophies so we can highlight your accomplishments with the school!

This month is the Month of the Military Child!  Lemon Road was proudly awarded the Purple Star designation this fall.  The designation is awarded to schools that have demonstrated their commitment to meeting the needs of military-connected students and their families.  Thank you to those families for your service and support.  We are so happy to have you as a part of our Lemon Road community for as long as you are here.  April 17th is Purple Up! Day, please join us in wearing purple to honor our military families.

This week was National Assistant Principal Week!  Thank you to Ms.Ulsh for all you do at Lemon Road!

Parent Reminders:

Solar Eclipse - Monday

A solar eclipse is happening tomorrow afternoon, April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon and one that requires important safety reminders.  Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes.

At Lemon Road, we plan to provide donated approved eyeglasses from the National Science Foundation so all students and staff can safely view the eclipse.  Some classes will go out after 2 PM to view the early phases of the eclipse, however the peak will occur around 3:20, after our dismissal.  Parents are also welcome to send in appropriate glasses if you have them for your child.  Even with approved eyewear, if you prefer your child remain indoors between 2:00 and dismissal, please email your child's teacher before noon tomorrow.

Here are some important reminders:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce it at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. We will be providing eyewear that has been approved for viewing.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m., and ends around 4:32 p.m. Please remind your child that they cannot look at the sun during dismissal without protective eyewear.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

Portrait of a Graduate Night

Every Lemon Road student is working towards mastery of Portrait of a Graduate (POG) attributes.  This year, our goal is that all students will help curate a portfolio of artifacts demonstrating their growth in one or more attributes. To find out more about the POG attributes, join us at POG Night on Thursday, April 11 - the theme for the night is "POG Heist".  This event will be a fun and interactive way for families to learn about and celebrate the Portrait of a Graduate attributes through games, challenges, and other activities.

Message from Mrs. Castillo

We hope you and your family are enjoying a relaxing time over Spring Break!. Before break our 5th & 6th graders participated in the 3v3 basketball tournament and our 4th graders attended their field trip to the Baltimore Aquarium - it was a fun week!

We are excited to welcome our students back on April 3rd.   This marks the beginning of the 4th quarter of the school year.  Quarter 3 Progress Reports will be available via SIS ParentVue starting on Monday, April 15, unless otherwise requested by the parents. Paper copies are being sent home for quarter 1 and the final report.

Parent Reminders:

School-based AAP Referrals

Spring referrals for school-based AAP services (part-time or subject specific) are due to Avery Straw via email at [email protected] by April 15, 2024. Forms can be found here. Further information can be found here

April - Month of the Military Child

We invite the Lemon Road community to recognize the resilience of our military-connected children during April, the Month of the Military Child! Every year we take this opportunity to celebrate our military-connected children and thank them for their service as part of a military family.  Lemon Road earned a purple star this year and joined the 68 other FCPS schools with this recognition.  We look forward to wearing purple on  Purple Up Day (April 17, 2024) as a school community.

Spring SOL Dates Spring Portraits Available

Spring Portraits are now available to view and order online! Parents of those photographed should have received an e-proof. All orders will include free shipping for the next two weeks until April 12.  Parent questions/concerns can be sent to [email protected].  Use the link and enter your child’s Student ID number as the online code.

Portrait of a Graduate Night

Every Lemon Road student is working towards mastery of Portrait of a Graduate (POG) attributes.  This year, our goal is that all students will help curate a portfolio of artifacts demonstrating their growth in one or more attributes. To find out more about the POG attributes, join Lemon Road staff at POG Night on Thursday, April 11 - the theme for the night is "POG Heist".  This event will be a fun and interactive way for families to learn about and celebrate the Portrait of a Graduate attributes through games, challenges, and other activities.

LRES PTA Updates

The PTA Spring Fair will be on April 20th from 10 am - 3 pm. We will have inflatables, a climbing wall, food trucks, games, a bake sale and more as well as our Roaring Raffle! Flyers came home in folders this week. Adults and kids under the age of 5 attend for free but all school aged children need a bracelet to attend. Buy your bracelet now at the pre-sale price of $20 and please sign up to help with the event.

Our PTA meeting on April 17th will feature Ms. Burke, who will talk about literacy at LRES and library events over the summer, as well as Mrs. Norton, who will be talking about the upcoming Art shows and opportunities for parent volunteers at Lemon Road.

Staff Appreciation Week at LRES will be May 6 -10th. More information will be shared after the break but if you have a student who loves to make friendship bracelets we will be collecting bracelets for staff members starting April 15th!

Positivity Project - Humor

This week, we will be focusing on the character strength of HUMOR. A person with the strength of humor is skilled at seeing the funny side of things, bringing smiles and laughter to others. Humor stretches the mind to look at things from different perspectives, keeping people mentally agile and alert.

Solar Eclipse

The total solar eclipse will take place on Monday, April 8th.  The eclipse will begin around 2:04 p.m. and end at 4:32 p.m. with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m. As the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

Positivity Project: Identifying and Appreciating the Good in Others

This week, our students and staff will take time to identify and appreciate the good in others - a core element of the Other People Mindset. Often, it’s easier to blame others for our problems or find flaws in others to use as excuses for our own jealousy, or resentment. The problem is that this negativity usually leads to problems for ourselves. To see the good in others, we must first slow down and take the time to pay attention and look for the intentions behind people’s words and actions.

Thank you to our PTA for the delicious treats in the lounge and door to door on Friday for our amazing staff & teachers!  This really welcomed in March at Lemon Road!

Our 2nd graders loved sharing their realistic fiction stories with their grown ups on Friday.  We had a great turnout and the student work was well written!  Thank you to our 6th grade parents who joined our students and staff on their field trip to Philadelphia - this was a long, but fantastic day for our students to experience the American History that they have been learning about.

Please remember that Tuesday is a student holiday. The Fairfax Board of Elections requested that schools be closed on Tuesday, March 5th, to accommodate the administration of the 2024 presidential primary election.  Central offices, school offices, and SACC will remain open. Have a great week!

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!  Everyone really got into "Decades Day" while celebrating our February birthdays on Friday.  Next month is silly socks on March 22.

Our teachers and staff look forward to a full week of learning!  Did you know we are about 1/2 way through the 3rd quarter already?  See last week's newsletter for ways parents can support their child's learning from home.

We have been noticing an uptick of late arrivals in the morning.  All students need to be in the doors by 8:15 to be on time.  Students will be marked tardy if they are not in the building by 8:15 AM.  Students that arrive after 8:15 must be walked in by a parent into the main office.

Parent Reminders:

1.  Don't forget to order your child the Lemon Road 2023 - 2024 yearbook (school code: 26164)

2. Parents that would like a copy of Stuart Gibbs new book need to return the form in their Wednesday folder by March 3.

The Fairfax Board of Elections has requested that schools be closed on Tuesday, March 5th, to accommodate the safe and efficient administration of the 2024 presidential primary election.  Therefore, March 5th will be a school holiday for students and a virtual School Planning Day for school staff.

Central and school offices will remain open. SACC will remain open, as on other professional work days.

Positivity Project: Love of Learning

Next week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Love of Learning. Love of learning means you master new topics on your own or in school.  Those with a love of learning are intrinsically motivated and engaged in a topic regardless of achieving an external standard. They enjoy learning simply for the sake of learning. They don’t need a prize of a high grade as a reward. Their reward is the process of doing the work and improving.

To practice and encourage the character strength of love of learning with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

Help Your Child at Home

We are more than halfway through the academic year.  Below are ways to help your child improve their academic performance from home:

  1. Ensure that you are reading the communication from your child’s teacher completing weekly assignments, and discussing suggested questions  related to units of study to continue the connection from school to home.
  2. Monitor your child’s Schoology accounts where additional announcements, work, and study materials may be posted.  All parents have access to this site.
  3. Discuss your expectations for your child’s participation in learning.  While we permit a student to doodle, use a fidget, etc. while fully participating in the learning, if these behaviors are weakening their focus in the class, ask them to limit these practices.  The school expectation is that these practices may help increase focus but should only be done in a manner not distracting them or their peers.  As the parent, you may set boundaries with your child regarding these practices.
  4. Parents of 4th - 6th graders, take the time to review your child’s agenda each night.  This is provided by our PTA to all 4th, 5th, and 6th graders and students have been shown how to record assignments, due dates, projects, assessments, and classroom special events.
  5. Have your child complete 30 minutes of Lexia from home weekly to improve reading and spelling.
  6. Have your child complete 30 minutes of Khan Academy or ST Math from home weekly to improve math skills.
  7. Take advantage of Tutor.com provided by FCPS to assist any FCPS student with assignments, learning, or content.

To access many of the online resources mentioned, visit the Lemon Road Student Links page.  Many of these accounts require your child to log in through Clever.

Spring Pictures

This spring, on March 14, Victor O'neill Studios will return to Lemon Road to take pictures of students participating in clubs, our sixth grade panoramic photo, and any individual student photos requested by a parent.  Be on the lookout for a pre-order form if you would like your child's individual photo taken on March 14.

Positivity Project: Humility

Next week, our community will focus on humility. Humility is often characterized as synonymous with shy or meek. This is false. True humility is a sign of strength; it is a quiet confidence in who you are. It requires an honest self-reflection on your strengths and weaknesses, and self-control over ego, arrogance, and vanity. It encapsulates a person’s feelings, thoughts, and actions. It includes resistance to false modesty or the “humble brag.”

Positivity Project: Love

Next week, our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Love. Love means you value close relationships with others and being close to people.  The character strength of love represents the way we think, feel, and behave towards the people with whom we have close relationships. When one person loves another person, that person: comforts and makes the other feel safe; sacrifices on the other’s behalf; supports the other during struggles; and places the others' needs ahead of their own. If you love a person, that person makes you feel safe and secure. You can be yourself with that person. You miss that person when they are not around.

Message from Mrs. Castillo

Last week was an exciting week as in addition to all the typical learning, our 2nd and 3rd graders welcomed a local orthodontist to their classrooms to share about good dental health and our 6th graders participated in the annual 6th Grade Volleyball Tournament!  We were proud of all our 6th graders, but especially for the The Spiking Lions who not only won the tournament, but beat the staff in the final round.  Fun was definitely had by all!

As part of an FCPS initiative, students complete at least 15 minutes of Lexia Power Up or Lexia Core5 in their English literacy block each week. Lexia is an evidence-based, computer-based program that adapts instruction to meet the needs of learners in the categories of grammar, word study, and comprehension.  Have your child log into Lexia occasionally from home to see if they are completing expected minutes each week.  Some students may benefit from logging in additional minutes from home - especially those that participate in leadership teams and/or work with additional school staff in reading or math.  In order to access, have your student go to the Lemon Road Student Links page on our website and click Clever.  From there, your child logs in using their school credentials and can select Lexia.

Note that students must be supervised after school if remaining on school property.  Students may not remain at school or on the playground after dismissal without a responsible adult to chaperone. We have had a few incidents where students were unsupervised.  School staff will instruct all students to go home and check in with their grown up before being allowed to play on school grounds as there are no school staff supervising after 2:55.

This Friday, we look forward to hosting our Quarter 3 Principals' Coffee and want to know what is on your mind!  Submit a question or topic request here.

Quarter 2 Progress Reports

In an effort to reduce paper waste, student Progress Reports for quarters 2 and 3 will be shared electronically through ParentVue.  Second quarter progress reports will be available in SIS ParentVUE on February 5 at 6 AM.  Lemon Road will continue to print quarter 1 and final progress report cards for our families.  If you need a paper copy of your child's progress report, please send an email to Ms. Vaughn in the main office who will print and send a copy home in an upcoming Wednesday folder.

Positivity Project

This week our school community will be focusing on the Other People Mindset of Cheering Others’ Successes. This means when other people succeed, I am happy for them and cheer them on. Being happy for other people when they succeed isn’t always everyone’s initial reaction. People who have negative reactions to the success or misfortune of others are colloquially known as “haters.” It’s important to note that these are natural emotions and in small doses can be helpful in allowing us to see what we care about -- and motivate us to pursue those goals.

But making a commitment towards cheering on other people’s successes can be a great way to improve our own health, happiness, and relationships. People can take active steps to be more genuinely happy for the achievements of others. Ways to do this include; telling others about the success of your modest friend; noticing when your reaction to a sibling’s success is envy or jealousy -- and asking yourself why that is; reminding yourself that appreciating the excellence in another is a character strength; asking your successful teammates and classmates what they do to prepare for games or tests.

Message from Mrs. Castillo

Monday is the first day of the 3rd quarter of school!  It is amazing we are already halfway through the school year. We are thrilled with the progress our students are making every single day and look forward to all of the growth and excitement in the 3rd and 4th quarter.

Last week, our 3nd grade students presented their PBL to an expert in the field and many parents and grown ups.  Their presentations were very well done and we noticed growth in their Portrait of a Graduate attributes of communication and collaboration as well!  On Thursday, our fifth and sixth graders enjoyed our first SCA dance in a few years and it was awesome!  Thank you to our SCA Sponsors and Officers for their organizations.  The students and staff had a great time!

During the early release on Thursday, school staff organized all lost items, returned those with names to the homeroom classrooms and hung all remaining items.  Please stop by the lost & found to reclaim any family items!  We will donate items again at the end of winter.

In a few weeks, we look forward to hosting our Quarter 3 Principals' Coffee and want to know what is on your mind!  Submit a question or topic request here.

We will see our students tomorrow for the start of the third quarter. We are looking forward to a full week of school together!

Message from Mrs. Castillo

Happy Snow Day!  Hope everyone is safe and warm during this 1st snowfall of the year!  I saw lots of Lemon Road families and alumnae sledding and making fun memories.  Keep an eye on the FCPS website regarding any schedule changes for tomorrow - they have not yet been determined.

We look forward to tomorrow’s concert and author’s visit!  These are special experiences for the students and we plan to have them even if we have a 2 hour delayed opening.  Our next spirit day and Freaky Friday is Friday - Pajama Day!  All students and staff are encouraged to get cozy and celebrate January birthdays!

PTA News

The weather might be frightful but we have some fun events happening to lift your spirits!

  • Join us in celebrating the talented musicians at Lemon Road at the Winter Concerts on January 17th.
  • It's not too late to see the Wizards play the Nuggets on Sunday January 21st. Tickets are $35 each - with $5 per ticket going to the PTA. Join us! https://fevo-enterprise.com/event/wiz-lemonroad
  • Interested in getting more involved with the school & PTA? PTA Board positions need filling for the next school year - email us at [email protected] to find out more or recommend someone you think would be great!
  • January 24 & 25th take the night off cooking and head to Ledo pizza for dinner and support the PTA at the same time. The out and eat in orders all count - just mention Lemon Road when ordering
Positivity Project

This week, our community will focus on perseverance.  This means you complete what you start despite obstacles.  You never give up.  The concept of perseverance can most often be found in one’s active pursuit in overcoming obstacles.  Those who persevere are able to set goals for themselves and then take active, calculated steps toward those goals. People demonstrating high levels of perseverance are able to handle significant, sometimes repeated, setbacks in pursuit of goals.
