Fifth Grade
Fifth grade is a busy year for students. Not only are they continuing to work on their executive functioning skills. They are also focusing on growing their Portrait of a Graduate (POG) skills. They working hard to be collaborators, communicators, and goal-driven learners. Fifth graders work to dig deeper in their math and reading skills.
In Language Arts, students work on
- organization in writing,
- grammar, and mechanics,
- reading comprehension skills,
- research,
- oral speaking skills
In Math, students focus on
- Fractions and decimals
- geometry, and measurement
- more complex problem-solving
Fifth grade is a big year in science. On top of the material learned in fourth grade, students will take the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) science test. New topics include
- force, motion, and energy
- landforms
- magnetism and electricity
- light and sound
In Social Studies will explore ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia, India, Greece, and Rome. They will use their understanding of interdependence and interrelationships to complete the Global Awareness Technology Project.
Fifth graders will take VGAs and SOLs in reading, math, and science.
